Arts Council of Sri Lanka
State Ballet and Puppetry Advisory Board

State Ballet and Puppetry Advisory Board is established for the purpose of advising and assisting the Arts council on the general advancement of the dance and to support a vibrant community of choreographers and dancers, dance groups and organizations so that the public can experience the highest standard of dance in Sri Lanka. Dance plays a key part in contemporary culture; it covers a wide range of aesthetics and styles and takes place in a wide range of settings.

Arts council and Dance panel promote development and networking opportunities and work closely with artists and organizations to develop new ways of presenting dance, and to widen the understanding and appreciation of the many and varied kinds of dance, influenced by the social and multi cultural richness of Sri Lankan society, and other art forms.

MAHINDA WIMALASIRI
Member

Mahinda Wimalasiri is the Head of History and theory of Dance and Drama Department of the University of Visual and Performing Arts and a Senior Lecturer in its Department of Upcountry Dance. He is a passionate traditional artist of kandyan dance and rituals, and has done many researches with related to his interests. Some of his research work includes, 'A critical study of devotion for Kadawara and Kadawara Kankariya in relation to Sri Lanka', 'Traditional music associated with Buddhism its manifestation and present nature' and 'A study of the usage of Horanewa and its present status. Mahinda completed his Bachelor of Arts and Master of philosophy degrees in the University of Kelaniya and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Colombo and a Postgraduate diploma in Writer ship and Communication from the University of Sri Jayawardenapura.

ASOKA MENDIS DE ZOYSA

Asoka is professor of German Studies at the Department of Modern Languages in the University of Kelaniya and coordinator of the project “Samkathana” at the Faculty of Humanities. He completed his masters and holds a PhD from the Freie Universität Berlin. His MA thesis was a philological analyses of Kalidasas Sanskrit Plays and Court Poetry (Kāvya) translated into German by Friedrich Rückert. His doctoral dissertation submitted in 1996 deals with India as seen in the German Theater in the times of Goethe, published in German under the title Blutrünstige Braminen am heiligen Strome (1997) in Frankfurt.
He has translated many contemporary German plays to Sinhala and English, some which he directed himself. His current research interests are Gender aspects on Costume in Sri Lanka, development of traditions seen in Buddhist Temple Murals, critical readings of Contemporary Sri Lankan Art and Popular Sinhalese Music. He writes regular reviews on Contemporary Dance and exhibitions. He writes

Dancer, choreographer and the founder of the dance academy 'Nirmalanjali' in 1986, having obtained the Diploma in Bharatanatyam in Colombo, did further studies at Bharata Kalanjali under Sri. V.P. Dhananjayan, Adayar, Chennai, and obtained the Advanced Diploma certificate. Subsequently completed the Bachelors and Masters Degree in Fine Arts at First Class of the Bharathidasan University, India

Recognised by the State of Sri Lanka for nomination to represent at the 6th World Tamil Conference in Malasysia, 50th Anniversary of the Diplomatic Relations between Norway and Sri Lanka in Norway, chosen to perform at the anniversary program of the famous Nadarajah Temple in Chidambaram, 50th Anniversary Celebration in Kandyan dance of Sri. Chitrasena and many other presentations both on stage and television on momentous occasions.

MALITH UPENDRA

Malith Upendra is a professional contemporary dancer, trainer and an emerging choreographer. Upon graduating from the University of Kelaniya (BA 1st Class ), he began his journey of exploring the horizons of the contemporary dancing and has represented Sri Lanka in many countries such as India, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Nepal and Japan as a dancer and a choreographer, being a principal dancer in the nATANDA Dance Theatre Lanka Pvt. Ltd for more than 15 years. He is also the founder of 'ECATA' project which is collective artists' project of contemporary arts.
