Arts Council of Sri Lanka
Dance and Ballet Advisory Board

State Dance and Ballet Advisory Board is established for the purpose of advising and assisting the Arts council on the general advancement of the dance and to support a vibrant community of choreographers and dancers, dance groups and organizations so that the public can experience the highest standard of dance in Sri Lanka. Dance plays a key part in contemporary culture; it covers a wide range of aesthetics and styles and takes place in a wide range of settings.

Arts council and Dance panel promote development and networking opportunities and work closely with artists and organizations to develop new ways of presenting dance, and to widen the understanding and appreciation of the many and varied kinds of dance, influenced by the social and multi cultural richness of Sri Lankan society, and other art forms.

  • National Dance Festival
  • Commemoration of World Dance Day.
  • National Ballet Festival
  • Commemoration of World Puppetry Day.
  • National Drumming Festival.
  • Studies, conferences and workshops on Folk Drama, Rural Drama and Masks Art.
  • Programmes for reconstitution of Sokery, Kolam and Folk Drama.
  • Appreciation of service of eminent persons who  rendered their service to Dance, Puppetry and Ballet and granting awards to them.
  • Holding workshops on dance associated with estate culture and folk drama.

Prof. Karunarathna Bandara

Professional Drummer & Dancer

Karunaratna Bandara, Professor of Aesthetic Studies at the University of Colombo, is regarded as an authority on traditional Sri Lankan drumming and dance. He is a Master Drummer and Dancer in the both the low country and hill country traditions.

He has toured internationally as a teacher and a performer and director and authored two books on Sri Lankan drumming traditions.

Ravibandhu Vidyapathy

Professional Dancer & Choreographer

Ravibandhu Vidyapathy is the eldest son of Kalashoori Somabandhu Vidyapathy, the well known classical painter, sculptor and Sri Lanka’s pioneer costume and décor designer for dance and ballet; and Malathi Somabandhu, the reputed Kandyan dancer and the daughter of great dance Guru Algama Kiriganitha.

Ravibandhu studied Classical Kandyan dance under the legendary dancers Great Gurus Chitrasena and Vajira and traditional drumming under the renowned percussionists Guru Piyasara Shilpadhipathi and Guru Punchiguru.

He is an acclaimed Kathakali actor- dancer, studied at the Kerala Kala Mandalam in India, also studied Hindustani Music under the guidance of Ustad David Podiappuhamy of Maihar, India and Shri P.V. Nandasiri of Sri Lanka.

LENADUWZ LOKUGE RANGANA NAWODINI ARIYADASA, professional Bharatanatyam Dancer, Choreographer and Instructor in Classical Bharatanatyam from the world renowned Institite "KALAKSHETRA " the fine Arts institute founded by Srimathi Rukmini Devi Arundale, South India..she is Also the Director of Rangana Ariyadasa Dance Academy opened in the year 2000, and is Registered under the Ministry of Cultural Department..Rangana has produced more than 400 students who learnt this art form who are residing around the globe..She has done 30 solo debutes( Arangetrams) and got the opportunity to conduct workshops in many countries..she was attached to the youth Council as a Instructress, as well as sarasavipaya, Tower foundation, Mahaweli Centre and also to the tri forces, Cultural troupe.

Chandana Wickramasinghe

Chandana Wickramasinghe learned his first step of dancing from Vajira Chithrasena at the age of six. He was then trained and given Ves by Kulasiri Budawatta.

In 1999 Chandana and the Dancers' Guild was established and today with a troupe of almost 40 professional dancers train over 4000 students within Sri Lanka. The schools groom dancers from the age of 4 years and are located in Colombo, Kiribathgoda, Nittambuwa and Kandy. The recent two concert "Salamba and "Kanya" gave highlight to professionalism, bringing poetry in motion alive through a series of fusion dance and music recitals which left the audience in total bliss. The troupe has traveled to over 74 countries and performed before multi diverse audiences in the cities of Europe, Asia, Middle East, Canada and Australia and receive great admiration for their unique style and exquisite dance rhythm.

Dancer, choreographer and the founder of the dance academy 'Nirmalanjali' in 1986, having obtained the Diploma in Bharatanatyam in Colombo, did further studies at Bharata Kalanjali under Sri. V.P. Dhananjayan, Adayar, Chennai, and obtained the Advanced Diploma certificate. Subsequently completed the Bachelors and Masters Degree in Fine Arts at First Class of the Bharathidasan University, India

Recognized by the State of Sri Lanka for nomination to represent at the 6th World Tamil Conference in Malaysia, 50th Anniversary of the Diplomatic Relations between Norway and Sri Lanka in Norway, chosen to perform at the anniversary program of the famous Nadarajah Temple in Chidambaram, 50th Anniversary Celebration in Kandyan dance of Sri. Chitrasena and many other presentations both on stage and television on momentous occasions.
